Open Burning Smoke Control Regulations (OBSCR) Sept. 15, 2019

Creston : High (H) Smoke Sensitivity Zone #67

  1. Must be vegetative matter, less than 3 cm diameter

  2. Director can approve > 3 cm diameter but < 10 cm

  3. No burning over 10 cm diameter*

  4. No burning of domestic waste, plastic, treated/painted wood

  5. Must be reasonable effort to minimize amount of material and emission of smoke

  6. *Exceptions: approved wildfire mitigation or verified diseased matter

General Setbacks:

  • 500 m from house/buildings (businesses)

  • 1000 m from school/hospital

  • These can be reduced to 100 m/500 m if:

  • Vegetative pile is dry

  • Horizontal size is less than 2X the vertical

  • No stumps (must be less than 50 cm)

  • Reasonable effort to notify neighbours

  • Written record is available

  • Good ventilation forecast has been given before starting

When You Can Burn:

  • 1 hour after sunrise until 4 p.m. or 2 hours before sunset

  • Maximum 2 day burn

  • Seasoned wood

  • Pile extinguished overnight

When You Can't Burn:

  • When local air flow is causing negative impact on local nearby homes

A Director can prohibit an open burn

  • If ambient pollution measure is reaching or will reach unacceptable levels.

  • If pollution is see to be occurring the fire MUST BE EXTINGUISHED

Maximum fine: $5,000 - $200,000
